Paediatric Service Provision in the UK

The care of children with skin disease is delivered in a number of clinical settings by a variety of healthcare professionals.  The National Services Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services (Department of Health 2004) sets out standards to ensure high quality and integrated health and social care for children.

The National Health Service (NHS) is currently undergoing significant changes, with the advent of commissioning and the reconfiguration of services.  As skin problems are the most common ailments seen in children the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) and the British Society for Paediatric Dermatology (BSPD) felt it was important to pre-empt potential variations to service provision by providing members, commissioners, clinical commissioning groups and Trusts with a  robust consensus report on the Minimum Service Standards for Paediatric Dermatology.  This report is based on current available evidence and advice from the Department of Health, the Royal Colleges and expert consensus.  In addition to informing commissioners, it provides a framework for individual dermatology departments to maintain and improve their standard of care for children with skin disease.
