International Dermatology Education Alliance (IDEA)

Expanding access to high-quality dermatology education globally

International Dermatology Education Alliance (IDEA)

Our Mission

Medical education has become a well-established field of international research, with advancements in evidence-based methodology. The role of education in developing a high-quality healthcare workforce is undeniable.

Despite this, the field of dermatology lacks a dedicated network of experts in pedagogy—the science of learning—to support clinicians in becoming the most effective teachers they can be. Recognizing this need, Professors Mini Singh and Kanade Shinkai founded IDEA to bridge this gap.

IDEA is a global initiative with representation from dermatologists passionate about education, teaching, and learning from nearly all continents. Our aim is to promote faculty development in dermatology education, encourage evidence-based teaching practices, and foster the growth of future educational leaders in dermatology. We also work closely with dermatology societies worldwide to support and enhance their educational initiatives.

Our Vision

To ensure dermatology education is underpinned by evidenced-based pedagogic principles and develop dermatology professionals who are innovative leaders in the field of healthcare education.

Our Guiding Principles

 • High quality dermatology education can transform learners’ dermatological practice.
 • Powerful and transformative leaders in dermatology education are needed across the globe.
 • Innovative ways to provide access and development opportunities in cutting edge healthcare education practice for dermatology educators are achievable.
 • Supporting interprofessional communities of dermatology healthcare professional educators will elevate high quality dermatology education for all.

Our Objectives

 • To develop dermatology teachers, educators and leaders who understand and apply evidence-based pedagogic methods to deliver transformative dermatology education.
 • Promote dermatology education, scholarship, and research as an academic pursuit.
 • Encourage global networks leading to the sharing of knowledge, expertise, and best practices in dermatology education.
 • Collaborate with international dermatology societies and organisations to support their teachers, supervisors, and educational leaders in the field of healthcare education.
 • To support under resourced areas (LMICs) to create and deliver high quality, effective teaching opportunities for their learners.
