BAD Vision Statement on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Interventions

The British Association of Dermatologists Vision Statement on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Interventions

The BAD welcomes the development and adoption of appropriately regulated and governed uses of AI interventions to enhance safe clinical practice and improve outcomes for people with skin disease.

There is immense potential from clinically-led development and evaluation of AI to improve the speed and accuracy of diagnosis and precision management of skin diseases including skin cancer.

The BAD encourages AI solutions for dermatology that have:

  • an intended use that addresses a clinical unmet need and which integrates in patient pathways to enhance the service provided by health care professionals, improving patient care.
  • a clearly defined use case (population) which can be safely and demonstrably applied to the largest dataset including where possible all ages, skin types, and body sites, and all presentations of skin disease.
  • employed nationally agreed definitions of required standardised input data e.g., images and clinical information – with clinically meaningful outputs that can be linked to electronic health records.
  • a robust, transparent evidence base to support the proposed AI diagnostic/monitoring functions in the intended patient population for a clearly specified set of skin diseases.
  • supporting health economics evaluation demonstrating cost-effectiveness in the intended clinical setting.
  • educational resources to support health care professionals to use, interpret and evaluate the AI tool.

The BAD has been engaging with patients, regulators, AI experts, partner agencies and industry to develop standards for best practise which facilitate clinically beneficial AI interventions for patients with skin disease. The BAD UK-wide AI Consortium (as a company-agnostic platform) is in its transitional phase gaining momentum, to support safe and appropriate use of AI tools in dermatology.
