>> I am about to see a healthcare professional; what do I ask them?

The questions you will have will depend on whether you have had HS for a long time or you have just discovered that you have the disease. But you might find it useful to ask the following sorts of questions:

  • Do I have HS?
  • Will I need to have any tests to confirm the diagnosis?
  • Do I have severe disease?
  • What is the likely prognosis for me?
  • What are the treatment options and what do you recommend as the first-line treatment for me? (Remember not all treatments will work in all people).
  • What should I expect this treatment to do? For instance, will it reduce the frequency or severity of the attacks, reduce the amount of discharge, reduce the pain or even give me complete disease remission?
  • How long will we persist with this treatment before deciding if it has been helpful or not?
  • What are the side-effects of this treatment and how does this compare with other treatments?
  • Are my children at risk of getting HS?
