Healthy Skin for All – A Commissioners Guide – 9th October 2008 (London)

Following on from the “Making a Case for Dermatology” meeting and with the imminent publication of the CC2H commissioning guidance, the BAD Clinical Services Unit (CSU) has organised a meeting for members and their commissioners.

In the current climate of ‘Care Closer to Home’ and ‘Teams without Walls’ it is more important than ever that commissioners are aware of the essentials of a high quality, safe and sustainable service.
Consequently, the BAD Clinical Advisory Unit is holding a one day seminar on this topic. Delegates will have the opportunity to learn more about dermatology as a service, the GPwSI accreditation processes, the commissioning guidance and the resource implications affecting commissioners when trying to deliver a safe, cost effective, high quality service.

The BAD invites members to attend this day with their lead commissioners for dermatology.

This event has been designed for:
• PCT Commissioning Managers
• Practice Based Commissioning Leads
• PBC Consortia Leads
• Hospital Business Development Teams
• Consultant Dermatologists

There will be a charge of £50 for each commissioner to cover administration expenses.

Getting to Grips with Evidence-Based Dermatology Course

This popular course is now in its tenth year. The aims of the course are to

a)       improve your skills at critical appraisal when reading dermatological literature, and

b)       improve your ability to design and participate in clinical research projects.

The course uses the principles of epidemiology and statistics such as chance, bias and confounding to provide a framework to achieve these aims. The main taught elements of dermato-epidemiology and statistics are part of the UK and AAD specialist trainee/resident curriculum. The course may also appeal to consultants who wish to improve their skills at critically appraising published clinical trials and also statistics in general. Overseas dermatology trainees are always welcome. There will also be a bursary of up to a £1000 available for up to 2 colleagues from the Regional Dermatology Training Centre in Moshi, Tanzania, to attend.

The course is taught by Professor Hywel Williams from the Centre of Evidence-Based Dermatology (www.nottingham.ac.uk/dermatology) in collaboration with epidemiologists and statisticians from the Trent Research Development Support Unit at Nottingham (www.trentrdsu.org.uk). Dermatological examples are used to illustrate concepts throughout the course. It is a 3-day course which is hard work, but good fun. The course costs £300, and there is a maximum of 24 places in order to ensure that groups are kept to a sensible size.
