| >> Become a Dermatologist
A dermatologist is a medically qualified practitioner who has then gone on to specialise in medicine and then sub-specialise in dermatology. What do you need to become a Consultant Dermatologist?
- Three or four 'A' levels usually at grade A or B. These must include Chemistry and usually also Biologiy, Physics or Maths.
- Medical school for five years to obtain an MB,BS, MB,BCh or MB, BChir degree
- One year of house jobs (Foundation year 1) before becoming fully registered as a medical practitioner
- Two to three years training in general medicine (Foundation years 2 and 3 or more) to obtain a higher degree in medicine and become a member of the Royal College of Physicians
- Having obtained the MRCP examination you would then be able to apply for a training post in dermatology which is obtained by competition. Currently, this is a very popular specialty and the competition for entry to the specialty is most intense (Frequently, people starting dermatology have also done a doctorate in medicine to obtain their MD before entering the speciality).
- Become a Specialist Registrar (SpR) in Dermatology and train for four years in dermatology.
- At the end of that four years you would become an accredited dermatologist and be able to apply for a consultant hospital post as a consultant dermatologist.
