The amount of funding required depends largely on the type of research that you wish to perform.
Small clinical studies may be completed with little or no formal funding, whilst an MD or PhD will require funding for lab or fieldwork as well as salary support. University fees also need to be considered, since many grant-giving bodies exclude this expense from their funding.
It is advisable to ask your research supervisor(s) for their advice on appropriate sources of funding for your work. Find out as much as you can about each funding body to ensure that your proposed research falls within their target area.
Allow plenty of time to obtain funding: it may take several months to prepare a large grant application and 1 year or more before a successful application is funded.
