Function

Dermatology nursing is a highly specialised area of clinical practice. The many nurses working in dermatology clinics and wards have limited opportunity to meet with colleagues to discuss patient care, treatments or changes in practice. As nurses provide care for the vast numbers of people who attend skin clinics throughout the country, it was felt that there was a great need to develop a specialist network of nurses with an interest in Dermatology.

In 1989 the British Dermatological Nursing Group (BDNG) was formed and affiliated to the BAD.

Aims of the BDNG

1 Promote the development of the highest standard of care for the patient receiving dermatological care.
2 Promote the development and recognition of the nurse's role in dermatology, for the benefit of the patient.
3 Promote and support the education of nurses for their role in dermatology.
4 Promote and support research into all aspects of dermatology nursing and dermatological patient care.
5 Provide a source of expertise for nurses facing clinical and managerial challenges in the field of dermatology nursing.
6 Provide a forum for the dissemination of developments and knowledge in the field of dermatology nursing.

Since 1989 the group has:

  • collected the data to establish a national Dermatology Nursing Resources Directory
  • produced the quarterly Journal called Dermatological Nursing
  • organised a national conference each year
  • published national standards for dermatological nursing in association with the Royal College of Nursing.
  • established research awards and scholarships
